Reed was a two-time first team All-American and a four-time All-Southwestern Athletic Conference selection. He finished his career with 2,280 points for an 18.7 average and 1,851 rebounds for a 15.2 average. He had a 59.7% career field goal percentage. He averaged 26.6 points and 21.3 rebounds (2nd in nation and 1st in SWAC) and had a 61.9% field goal percentage in 1964, 21.2 points and 17.1 rebounds (1st in SWAC) and had a 56.5% field goal percentage in 1963, 17.6 points and 14.6 rebounds and had a 58.5% field goal percentage in 1962, and 10.8 points and 8.9 rebounds and had a 61.1% field goal percentage in 1961. He participated in three NAIA Tournaments, leading Grambling St. to the 1961 NAIA national championship and to a third-place finish in 1963. He also led Grambling St. to two SWAC titles. He was a member of the U.S. team that won the gold medal in the 1963 Pan-American Games, as well as the U.S. team that competed at the 1963 FIBA World Championship.
Reed was selected in the second round of the 1964 NBA Draft (10th overall pick). He went on to play ten seasons in the NBA, becoming the 1965 NBA Rookie of the Year, the 1970 NBA Most Valuable Player, a two-time NBA Finals MVP, a five-time All-NBA selection, a seven-time NBA All-Star and the 1970 NBA All-Star Game MVP, while also leading the New York Knicks to two NBA titles. He later coached in the NBA, including serving as the head coach of the New York Knicks during two seasons in 1977-78 and of the New Jersey Nets during two seasons in 1988-89. In 1997 he was recognized as one of the 50 greatest players in NBA history. He is also a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, the NAIA Hall of Fame, the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame, the Small College Basketball Hall of Fame and the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame. |
